Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father was a carnival barker, died at the age of a tiny child, forcing her mother to help support the family by working as a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth lived in a slum Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She went to school in Boston. Following only two school years the young woman left to pursue the acting career. Her path was not without obstacles. While in New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills in crime magazines. the theatre work that she longed for was not available. The next position she was offered was the "hat check" lady at a club until she decided to quit and returned to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as a regular actor. She earned money by performing during the daytime as an usherette. She took classes in drama at the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
